Getting your first period can feel like a huge change, but I promise it doesn't mean that everything about you is going to change overnight. You're still the same person you were before your period started.

Lots of people worry that periods will make them moody, angry, or rude to their parents, but that doesn't happen to everyone. You may find that your moods stay much the same, especially as you've described yourself as calm and easy-going already.

You also don't need to worry about suddenly having to give up the things you love. You can still enjoy your favourite shoes, hobbies, sports, and activities. Having a period doesn't mean you have to become more grown-up overnight or stop being yourself.

It's great that you already have period pads and pantyliners. Pads are usually better for when your flow is heavier, while pantyliners can be useful when your period is very light or coming to an end.

As for PE, many people continue to run, play sports, and join in with all their usual activities while on their period. Some people get cramps, but not everyone does. If you do experience discomfort, there are ways to manage it, and you can always speak to a parent, teacher, or school nurse if you're worried.

Do you know, I've answered thousands of questions over the years, and this is one that comes up again and again. Not because you don't have a good relationship with your mum, but because talking about something so personal when you're already feeling self-conscious about puberty can feel like a really big deal.

The truth is, it doesn't have to be.

Chances are, your mum has already realised that your first period can't be too far away. She's probably noticed the changes that come with growing up and will be ready to support you when the time comes.

Take a deep breath and keep it simple. You could just say:

"Mum, I started my period today."

That's it.

You could then add:

"I think I'll need some period pads for the next few days, and maybe some to keep for next time too."

And if saying it out loud feels too embarrassing, that's okay. You could send a text, write a note, or even message her from another room if that feels easier. Plenty of girls find that less awkward than starting the conversation face-to-face.

Hi there ❤️ and firstly, I have to say that nobody can predict exactly when your first period will arrive. Not Google, not me, and not anyone else. Every girl's body develops at its own pace.

However, there are some signs that puberty is progressing nicely, and breast development and the growth of pubic and underarm hair are two of the biggest clues that your body is maturing. Mild tummy cramps can also happen for lots of reasons, including hormonal changes, but they do not mean that a period is definitely about to start.

So, while I can't tell you whether your first period will arrive at 10, 11, or even a little later, it would be sensible to start preparing now. A good idea is to put together a small period kit for your school bag. You could include a couple of period pads, a spare pair of underwear, and some wipes or tissues, so you'll feel confident and prepared if your period does start while you're at school.

Try not to worry too much. Getting your first period is a completely normal part of growing up, and when it does arrive, there will be people around to help you. Being prepared is the best thing you can do.

Wanting a bra is often one of the first signs that puberty is beginning. If your breasts are starting to grow or feel a little tender, it might be worth having another chat with your mum. You could try saying something like:

"Mum, I think my boobs are changing and I'd feel more comfortable wearing a bra or crop top. Could we go and look at some together?"

Lots of mums don't realise how important it feels to their child unless they bring it up again, so don't be afraid to mention it more than once.

As for periods, I know it can be exciting wondering when yours will arrive, especially when your friends are talking about it too! But the truth is that nobody can predict who will be first. Everyone's body develops at its own pace, and not everyone notices the same puberty signs before their first period. Some girls have lots of body hair, some have very little. Some get cramps before their periods start, while others don't get any at all.

Rather than focusing on being the first, it's a good idea to make sure you're prepared. You could keep a couple of period pads in your school bag so that whenever your first period does arrive, you'll feel confident and ready.

Please try not to panic. What you're describing can be completely normal during the teenage years.

When you've recently started having periods, it's very common for them to be irregular. Some girls can go several months between periods because their hormones are still settling down and their body is working out its own menstrual cycle. This can continue for the first few years after periods begin.

As for your tummy looking bigger, there can be lots of reasons for this. During puberty, your body naturally changes shape and stores a little more fat around the hips, bottom and tummy as you become more womanly. Bloating, constipation, growth spurts and normal weight changes can also make your stomach look or feel larger at times.

However, if there is any chance you have been sexually active, it's important to speak to a trusted adult and take a pregnancy test, as a missed period can be a sign of pregnancy.

If you've not been sexually active, then a three-month gap is usually not something to be frightened of. That said, it would be a good idea to let a parent, carer or GP know if:

• Your periods have stopped for more than three months.
• You have severe pain.
• Your tummy is becoming noticeably swollen.
• You're worried or feeling anxious about the changes.

There's no specific age when you should start shaving your pubic hair. In fact, you don't have to remove it at all unless you want to. Pubic hair is a normal part of growing up, and everyone chooses to manage it differently. Some people leave it as it is, some trim it a little, and some remove it completely.

Just because you've started your period doesn't mean you need to start shaving. The most important thing is keeping the area clean and comfortable. When you're on your period, make sure you change your period pads regularly and wash the area daily with warm water. If a little blood gets caught in the hair, a gentle wash will clean it away.

If you ever decide in the future that you'd like to remove some hair, it's best to talk to a parent or trusted adult first so they can help you do it safely. But honestly, at 11, there's absolutely no need to feel pressured to shave anything.

My First Period

Lots of people wonder this when they first start their periods, but the good news is that you can shower exactly as you normally would.

If you use tampons, you can either keep your tampon in while you shower or remove it beforehand and put a fresh one in afterwards. If you use period pads, simply take your pad off before getting into the shower.

You might notice a small amount of period blood while you're washing, and that's completely normal. The water doesn't stop your period, but any blood is easily rinsed away with the shower water.

A handy tip is to keep a small piece of tissue or toilet roll next to the shower. Once you've finished washing, you can place it between your legs while you dry yourself. This can catch any drips and give you time to get dressed, put on a fresh period pad, or insert a new tampon if that's what you use.

Remember, showering during your period is perfectly safe and can actually help you feel fresher and more comfortable, especially if you're experiencing cramps or feeling a bit bloated. 💕Vicki

This is a great question! Period underwear has become really popular, but lots of girls aren't quite sure how long they can safely wear it for.

The answer depends on how heavy your period flow is and what type of period pants you're wearing. Some are designed for a light period, while others can absorb a medium flow or even a heavier flow. It's always worth checking the absorbency level of your particular pair.

As a general guide, think about period underwear in the same way you would a period pad. If your flow is moderate to heavy, you'll usually want to change them every few hours rather than wearing the same pair all day. Many girls find that changing them after around four to five hours helps them stay comfortable and protected from leaks.

Another option is to wear a period pad inside your period pants. You can remove the pad halfway through the day and then let the period underwear provide backup protection for the rest of the day. This can be a great way to reduce the number of pads you use while still feeling secure.

But it actually shows something I often tell girls: even if you're twins, your periods won't necessarily start at the same time. Just because one twin starts their period first doesn't mean the other twin is going to start theirs a few minutes, days, or even months later.

Puberty doesn't follow a strict timetable. While twins often develop in similar ways, their bodies are still individual, and things like breast development, growth spurts, and periods can happen at different ages and stages.

So although her twin sister being four minutes older might have seemed very important at the time, her body had its own schedule and wasn't taking any notice of the clock! ⏰😄

It's a great reminder that there's a wide range of normal when it comes to puberty, and comparing yourself to sisters, friends, or even a twin isn't always helpful.

Yes, having three periods in a row when you have PCOS and endometriosis can be completely normal. Every person's experience is different, and these conditions can be unpredictable. And, it can actually be reassuring when your periods arrive regularly for a few months in a row, especially when you have both PMOS (formally known as polycystic ovary syndrome) and endometriosis.

Even with these conditions, there may be times when your menstrual cycle arrives every month, almost like clockwork. Many people with PCOS find that their periods can become temporarily regular before changing again later on. Having three consecutive monthly periods doesn't usually mean anything is wrong. In fact, it can simply mean that your body is going through a period of more regular ovulation and hormone activity.

As someone whose daughter has lived with PCOS for many years, I know how unpredictable it can be. There have been times when she's had several regular periods in a row, only for them to become irregular again later. It can be frustrating when your body doesn't seem to follow a predictable pattern.
