Everything you need to know, from signs your teen is starting their period to the best products for their needs
If you’ve noticed your child starting to show signs of puberty, they may not be far off starting their period. It’s important to have a quick chat (nothing too heavy) and help them prepare. Read on to find out all you need to know about talking first periods. We know starting the conversation can be hard, so don’t worry if it takes you a few attempts to build up to it. We’re sure they're just as apprehensive, but knowledge is power and if they're clued up on the changes to expect, they can handle them with confidence. Although it sounds an obvious thing to say, it’s worth talking them through the basics of why we have periods, how the menstrual cycle works, and the blood loss you experience during a period.
As well as the other articles on our website, we've got all the information you need here to help explain these things in our ‘Becoming a Teen’ booklet. One of the biggest signs your a first period is on its way is an increase in discharge. You may want to buy some panty liners to protect underwear and make your teen feel less paranoid about starting their period and being caught short!

Then at least if they feel prepared it can reduce any anxiety about that dreaded first period. Lil-Lets Teens range has been specifically developed to fit smaller bodies whilst providing the same protection as adult products. You may remember having to use the products your mother had stashed in the bathroom cupboard and sitting in class with a giant pad in your pants. Here at Lil-Lets we remember those days almost too well and have specifically created our Teens range of liners, pads, and tampons to be smaller.
Well, we’ve thought about that too. We’ve been working with women for years and it’s something almost everyone wishes they had growing up. Our Starter Pack includes everything you need for a first period, including our Becoming a Teen booklet, in one cute but handy bag. We think the kit is ideal for when you have ‘the chat’, as you can talk through how to use a pad and advise on tampons if this is something they choose to use in the future. In demystifying the ways to manage a period they'll be a lot less daunted by the prospect of starting. Likewise, the starter kit is ideal for popping into school bags in case the first period starts during a school day… If you’re like us, it was one of our biggest fears as a teen!
