The Ultimate Guide to Homework, Revision & Exam Survival

Feeling totally overwhelmed by homework and revision? You’re not alone, it can be hard to know where to start, or how to stay calm! This guide is packed with real tips, smart hacks, and no-nonsense advice to help you beat exam stress and actually get stuff done

Part 1: Homework Help - How to Stay on Top Without Losing It

Homework can feel never-ending, but with a few smart habits, you can make it way more manageable.

In Part 1, we’ll kick things off with quick and easy tips to help you stay on track and get stuff done without the stress.

Just Start

The hardest part is starting. Tell yourself you’ll do just 30 minutes, no pressure. You’ll be surprised how quickly that turns into more once you get going.

Make a List

Write down everything you need to do and tick things off as you go. It keeps you focused and gives you that satisfying “I’m actually getting stuff done” feeling.

Plan Your Time

Don’t leave everything until the last minute. Break tasks into smaller chunks and spread them out over the week. A little each day equals way less stress.

Take Breaks

Set a timer and take short breaks every 30–50 minutes.

Stretch, grab a snack, or walk around, just don’t get sucked into TikTok or Netflix!

Breaks are super important because they give your brain time to rest and reset. If you try to power through for hours without stopping, your focus drops and it gets harder to remember anything. A quick pause helps you come back sharper and more ready to learn.

Don’t Multitask

Focus on one thing at a time. Doing five things at once sounds productive, but it actually makes everything take longer and way more stressful.

Stick to one subject while revising. If you’re jumping between topics, chances are you’ll end up overwhelmed and won’t remember much at all.

Keep it simple, stay focused, and give your brain the space it needs to absorb the info properly.

Shut Off Distractions

Phones, YouTube, TikTok, they’re fun, but majorly distracting when you’re trying to revise. Use apps like SelfControl or Forest to help you stay focused while you work.

And let’s be honest…we all know that a “quick 5-minute scroll” can magically turn into an hour. So give your brain a break and shut off the distractions, your future self will thank you!

Bribe Yourself

Promise yourself a treat, chocolate, a chill night, or something fun, once you’ve finished your homework or revision session. Rewards make it way more bearable and give you something to look forward to.

Why not get your parents involved! Maybe there’s a concert, day out, or something you’ve been eyeing up,  ask if they’ll make it a prize for all the hard work you’re putting in.

It’s a win-win: you revise, they cheer you on, and you get rewarded for smashing your goals!

Part 2: Exam Revision -Tips to Beat Stress and Revise Smarter

Exams can feel intense, but with the right strategy, you can stay calm and confident.

In Part 2, we’re diving into smart revision tips that help you actually remember stuff, manage stress, and feel more in control. Whether you’re prepping for mocks or the real deal, these hacks will help you glide through revision like a pro.

Believe in Yourself

You’ve been learning all year trust that you know more than you think. Positive self-talk can seriously boost your mindset.

Know What Could Come Up

Ask your teacher for a list of topics likely to appear. Use it as a checklist so you’re revising the right stuff.

If You Don’t Understand, Ask!

Don’t just memorise, make sure you actually understand the info. If something doesn’t make sense, ask your teacher, friends, or family.

And here’s the thing: if you don’t get it, chances are others don’t either. Be the brave one in class and speak up , you’ll help yourself and your mates.

Understanding beats guessing every time!

Make Your Notes Clear

Messy notes equals a messy brain. Use folders, notecards, highlighters whatever helps you stay organised.

Revise From Your Notes

Your class notes are tailored to what you’ve actually learned, so they’re the best place to start when revising.

Use them as your main source, and build on them with teacher-recommended websites or textbooks.

And here’s a cool fact: if you’ve written the notes yourself, you’re way more likely to remember the subject! So grab those scribbles and make them work for you.

Stick Notes Around Your House

Okay, it might drive your family a bit mad…but for a few weeks, stick revision notes on your mirror, fridge, bedroom door, anywhere you’ll see them often.

The more you see something, the more likely you are to remember it without even trying.

It’s a sneaky but super effective way to keep info fresh in your mind!

Get Friends or Family to Test You

Turn revision into a game. Ask someone to quiz you, it’s a fun way to test your memory and spot weak areas.

Understand the Question Types

Different questions need different answers, some might need just a few lines, while others could need a full paragraph (or two!).

Ask your teacher what kinds of questions to expect so you can prep properly. Knowing the format helps you plan your time and structure your answers like a pro.

Eat Smart

We know that it’s tempting to reach for a sugary treat when you’re stressed, but the buzz doesn’t last.

In fact, it can leave you feeling worse after just a short time. So fuel up the smart way, your brain will thank you later!

Snack on brain-friendly foods like fruit, oat bars, or nuts, they’ll keep your energy steady and your mind sharp.

And don’t forget to drink water! Staying hydrated really does help your brain stay focused.

Sleep = Success

Set a bedtime and stick to it. Give yourself time to wind down no phones, no revision, just chill. Sleep helps your brain lock in what you’ve learned. Check out our blog Too Tired For School.

Don’t Cheat

Cheating might seem like a shortcut, but it only hurts you in the long run. Be proud of the effort you’re putting in.

And just a heads-up: you might be asked about this topic later, so if you’ve cheated, it’s likely to catch up with you.

Stay honest, stay confident, and trust your own brainpower!

It’s Okay to Fail

Not getting the grades you hoped for doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Loads of people resit exams or take a different path and that’s totally fine.

What matters is learning from it and moving forward.  If you’re unsure what went wrong, have a chat with your teacher. They can help you figure out what to focus on next time so you’re ready to smash it!

Remember, whether it’s homework or exams, staying calm and organised is key. You don’t have to be perfect, just keep showing up, doing your best, and taking care of yourself.

You’ve got this!
