What exactly are stretch marks?
Stretch marks, medically known as 'striae', are reddish-purple streaks or lines that appear on the skin when it is stretched rapidly over a short period of time. They are commonly seen during puberty due to growth spurts and fluctuating hormone levels. They can also occur during pregnancy or in individuals who experience rapid weight gain or loss.
These marks are not harmful but can be alarming when they first appear. While they never completely disappear, they do fade over time and become less noticeable.
Preventing stretch marks involves maintaining a healthy weight and moisturizing the skin regularly with body moisturiser or body oil. Some believe these marks are genetic, so if your mum, gran or sister has them, there may be a chance you will too, while genetics may play a role in their development, these preventive measures can help reduce their likelihood.
Once stretch marks appear, there is no sure way to make them disappear completely.
Many products claim to eliminate them, but these claims are often exaggerated. Instead, stretch marks fade naturally over several years. Keeping the skin moisturised and maintaining a healthy weight can help improve their appearance.
The good news is that lots of people find self-tan lotions help fade these marks. However, if you plan to sunbathe, you should use a sun screen as these scars will tan just like the rest of your body and may become more noticeable.
